Finally Friday: Study Break Day 5

Although it has been a pretty cruisey week, i’m glad its Friday.  I don’t have anything planned for the weekend, but i’m looking forward to not studying for a day.  I did some reading for my Animal Behaviour assignment.  We have to train an animal to do something and then write a report on it.  I trained my flatmate’s dog to sit when she wants attention (instead of jumping up and putting her paws on your leg, she is a small dog).  I was going to teach her to dance, but she and my flatmate are up north for the break so I won’t have time.  Getting her to sit has been a pretty big accomplishment though.

Shadow has been pretty snuggly all day today, he even fell asleep in my lap for a bit while I read webcomics and chatted on the internet with people back home.  Some of the best things from the internet today: a talking otter (I swear he says “really really” and “YES REALLY”), and home made lava (science is the best job ever, you get paid to make a real lava flow).

Captain’s log: Study Break Day 4

You may have noticed that I’m getting a little bored of the study break already.  I am still being productive though.  In four days I have caught up on all of my missed lectures.  Starting tomorrow I will begin work on my assignments.

My bestie flaked on me today, so I didn’t have anyone to have lunch with (my one social event planned for the week).  Instead I took myself to sushi for lunch.  I then walked to a New Agey store and bought some incense and stones, because I am one of those silly pagan people who likes that sort of thing.  I then biked over to the craft store and picked up some copper wire to use to make the stones into pendants.  The first one is done but I’m not sure how well it will hold up.  The copper is a bit too soft to hold the shape reliably so I may have to get a jewelers file and make grooves to sink it into.  Now if only I could pick one hobby and stick with it.

Tomorrow should be a good day.  That’s all for me tonight.

Study break day 3

Today was Anatomy day.  But first I spent a bit of time goofing off on the internet.  Because it is vacation time.  I still managed to get through all of the study that I intended, with time to spare.  Even with the distraction of several movies playing in the background.

I watched: The Emperor’s New Groove – quite possibly my favourite movie of all time, Snatch – because it is so very quotable, The Fifth Element – my favourite live action movie that I have seen so many times I don’t actually need to watch it to know what is going on, and finally A Knight’s Tale – because I adore Paul Bettany and Alan Tudyk (and Heath Ledger was super cute in it too).

Tomorrow is scheduled lunch with the bestie and Animal Behaviour.  Should be an easy day.

Mid semester break day 2

Today I continue to feel human and have completely freed myself from the tyranny of whatever it was that was keeping me down last week.  To celebrate I studied physiology and got caught up on the lectures that I missed last week.  We are almost done with the endocrinology section of the study guide, one more lecture and then the paper coordinator for Anatomy will be teaching us in physiology.  Not surprising as the two are inextricably linked, form to function and function to form.  I like the anatomy instructor, he doesn’t mind being derailed for loosely relevant deviations of interest (like why some birds hop while others walk).

Since I was feeling so much better, I actually cooked for the first time in what seems like forever (just over two weeks).  I made my amazing spaghetti sauce, and it was indeed amazing.  Capsicum was on sale so I was even able to include fresh red and green capsicum (bell pepper for those playing the home game).  I had initially intended to make lasagna, but decided that I really wanted a meat sauce.  It is very hearty.  To accompany my delicious sauce, I made garlic butter and liberally applied it to slices of baguette and then topped it with slices of mozzarella.  It was the best food I’ve eaten in over a week.  Angels weep for having missed out on it.

It was amazing, and I probably ate too much

First day of the break

I am FINALLY feeling human again.  I was able to eat real food for all three meals today, and two of them yesterday, so I am reasonably convinced (though still cautiously optimistic, I do still have “sick people food” in my pantry) that I am over the worst of it.

So to celebrate, today I went through all of the biochemistry that I missed due to being sick last week.  And being the over-achiever that I am when I’m feeling good, I even went through the parts of the study guide that I hadn’t highlighted and put notes in from earlier in the semester (when I forgot it at home and used my computer for notes).  All in all, a reasonably productive day.  Tomorrow I intend to tackle physiology.

Today in the flat there was a lot of “home improvement” as ordered by the landlady.  First a guy came in to finally change the window in the bathroom from one that was permanently open slats to a permanently closed pane.  The house should be much warmer from now on.  While the window guy was finishing up, another guy came to fix the stove.  The pilot light wasn’t working very well on some of the burners and not at all for the oven.  He finished up in about an hour.  Around lunch time a team of guys showed up to install an HRV system.  They went room to room to show us where they were going to install everything, then got to work.  They needed to turn off the power to safely tie the unit into the thermostat, so that gave me about an hour or so of internet free study time (i was very productive).  Now the house should be less damp (much better for my health) and easier to heat during the day.  Finally around 5pm a guy came to attach another baseboard to the cabinet in the bathroom, which took him less than 10 minutes.

Now i have an hour or so to relax before bedtime, because I don’t have to get up at 6:30am this week.  Maybe I’ll do some more weaving while watching a movie.

Definitely overdid it yesterday

So I spent today back in bed…I did clean the litterbox and vacuum up the spilled litter…and remade my bed…but mostly just stayed in bed and did nothing…next week starts my 2 week mid-semester study break…I have a few assignments to work on and two midterms to study for…so I’ll be busy with school stuff…hopefully this sickness goes away soon

I may have overdone it a little

I actually went to school today! I woke up this morning and felt a little off, but persevered and had a bowl of plain white rice for breakfast (since it worked so well last night).  Feeling no ill effects from my breakfast of choice, I proceeded to get dressed and pack my bag.  Then miraculously found my flatmate and confirmed that she was indeed driving today (which was good because I had already missed the bus at that point).  We drove to school and I went to class followed by lab.  I made it through both with only a minor headache and feeling a bit woozy for my trouble (the headache of course being from looking down a microscope when my whole body just wanted to go back to bed).  After my lab I met up with my bestie and we had lunch (I ate a very small amount of something my friend brought me on Sunday when I didn’t know what I was going to feed myself with for the week since I couldn’t stand long enough to cook), then I waited for him to finish his last lecture of the day and he drove me home.  Which is where i have stayed since.  I tried eating dinner, but it only made me feel worse.  Being in jammies seems to help a little, but i’m reasonably sure that I overdid it today and might need to not go again tomorrow.

Since I’m still not 100% back mentally that is all I have for you today.

Edited to add:

Something amusing DID happen in lecture today.  Well technically just before lecture started.  There is a thing coming up called “Skull Cup” where the different vet years form teams and compete against each other (and supposedly they are trying to get some med school students down from wherever that university is) for fame and fortune (or maybe a bar tab, I’m not sure).  The events have been advertised as DRY events, no drinking.  The guy who was talking to us about it said “that basically means don’t get caught”.  I can’t believe I live in a place where people can’t have a sporting event without needing alcohol.  Are they not worried about budding alcoholics?  I really don’t get it.  There are happy hour’s scheduled for AFTER the event.  That is at a bar, where they can get drunk if they want to.  Why oh why do they feel the need to sneak booze into a dry event? I fear I will never know.
